Concrete Masonry Units (CMU), commonly called concrete blocks, are a standard material for commercial walls, foundations, and fire barriers. Preparing a masonry bid requires estimating block counts, vertical rebar, cell-fill grout, and horizontal ladder wire.
To estimate blocks quickly and accurately, estimators use standard coverage formulas.
The Standard CMU Block Formula
Standard CMU blocks in the United States measure 8 inches high by 16 inches long (nominal dimensions, which include a standard 3/8-inch mortar joint).
Because of these dimensions, a single block covers exactly 128 square inches of wall face area. To find the number of blocks needed per square foot of wall area:
`144 square inches (1 SF) / 128 square inches = 1.125 blocks per square foot`.
To estimate block quantities:
1. Calculate the total vertical surface area of the masonry walls (length x height).
2. Deduct all door, window, and control joint openings.
3. Multiply the net wall area by the multiplier: 1.125.
4. Add a waste factor (typically 5% to 10% for cuts and transit damage).
`Total Blocks = Net Wall Area (SF) x 1.125 x (1 + Waste %)`
For example, a CMU wall measuring 100 feet long by 12 feet high has a gross area of 1,200 SF. If there is a door opening of 21 SF, the net area is 1,179 SF. The block count is:
`1,179 SF x 1.125 = 1,326 blocks` (plus waste).
How to Estimate Cell-Fill Grout
CMU walls are often reinforced by pouring concrete grout into the hollow vertical cells of the blocks. The volume of grout required depends on block thickness and cell-pour spacing (e.g., filling cells at 16 inches or 32 inches on center, or filling all cells solid):
